Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is Physical Therapy?

Physical therapists are medical experts in musculoskeletal and neurological conditions. Physical therapists specialize in helping people improve their physical function and quality of life. While every patient’s condition is unique, a physical therapist uses a variety of hands-on techniques, modalities, exercises, and equipment to relieve pain quickly and restore your function to optimum levels. In other words, physical therapists work with you to help you achieve your goals, whether that’s recovering from an injury or surgery, reaching a new athletic level, or minimizing pain.

  • How long will I need Physical Therapy?

That depends on the reason you’re seeking care. We’ll work together to develop a personalized treatment plan that takes into account your specific needs.

  • What will happen during my first Physical Therapy appointment?

At your first appointment, your physical therapist will discuss your health history, reasons for seeking care, and your goals. The physical therapist will then complete a thorough initial evaluation, assessing things like your balance, strength, range of motion, function, and pain. Together, we will create a plan of care to assist you in meeting your goals.

  • Does Physical Therapy hurt?

Physical therapy shouldn’t be painful, but you may experience some temporary soreness from using muscles that are weakened or recovering. This is a normal response to therapy treatment. If you ever feel pain during or after a session, let me know.

  • Do you practice a “No Pain, No Gain” approach?

No. Pain causes muscle contraction, guarding, compensation, inflammation, and restricted range of motion. This leads to the perpetuation of the pain cycle and can lead to further injury or dysfunction if not treated. Chronic inflammation weakens connective tissue and leads to scar formation. This is why interventions at GET PHYSICAL LLC are designed to avoid pain.

  • Why is Redcord Sling Suspension Training so special?

Impaired neuromuscular strength, movement and motor control are among the greatest challenges posed by injury and/or inactivity. Redcord, a revolutionary sling suspension system created in Norway and not widely available in the U.S., provides a proven method for activating and re-educating muscles in order to develop pain-free optimal movement control, efficient movement patterns, and enhanced performance.

Redcord exercises are high effort without high mechanical load, using key biomechanical principles to optimally enhance muscle activation and function. Its unique combination of ropes and slings supports movement in multiple planes.

Redcord allows for both regressions and progressions of movement patterns involving the whole body. Regressions, utilizing bungee-assist movement that simulates a feeling of floating in water, allow the clinician to make the exercises less challenging in order for the client to develop pain-free musculoskeletal stability and movement control. Progressions allow the clinician to make the exercises more challenging. Redcord is appropriate for clients of all ages and fitness levels ranging from acute rehabilitation to elite athlete.

  • Do I need a physician referral before making a Physical Therapy appointment?

No! No prescription or referral from a physician is needed. The ability to visit a physical therapist without a prescription or referral is called Direct Access. Under Direct Access, you enjoy the freedom and flexibility of going to your preferred physical therapist to receive the treatment and care you require and deserve.

And there is good news for our long-term visitors from the northern states and ‘Snow Birds’ who spend their winters in Florida! The requirement that a physical therapist have a practitioner of record review and sign a plan of treatment does not apply when a patient has been physically examined by a physician licensed in another state, the patient has been diagnosed by the physician as having a condition for which the physical therapy is required, and the physical therapist is treating the condition.

To learn more about Direct Access and the rules in your state, read the specific rules and guidelines for each state.

Under current Medicare regulations, it is illegal for a physical therapist to accept cash pay from Medicare patients for services that may be covered under Medicare, even if the services provided meet all treatment, documentation, and HIPAA requirements and have been prescribed by their physician.
